I think it was a little of both and intended to be presented that way. We see from the flashback to her capture how easily Thanos seems to manipulate her into coming under his wing and of course we know from Nebula that Thanos favoured Gamora, which means she will have been heaped with praise and that is going to affect you. Even though Gamora says to Nebula that she was just trying to survive, there's a lot to unpack psychologically when you're the favourite but *know* your father figure is bad news. I can imagine thinking she killed Thanos was a moment of catharsis (after everything he did) as well as grief for someone who claimed to love you. In-universe it makes me all the more sad (and angry) that in the end, he kills her.

I'm sorry you're going through a similar feeling. Whenever people talk about their bad relationships with relatives I try to take the attitude that I don't know the situation first hand and it isn't my place to judge. Your parents are not Thanos yes, but your feelings are still real. I hope getting it out even as a fandom secret helped in some way.
