152. For one--you're totally right. Ouran is a beautiful, beautiful parody series and so many people seem to completely miss that somehow. Remember the funny, people. Remember the funny.

On the other hand... if you pick the right criteria, [i]every major female character ever[/i] is a "Mary Sue". Which is why I restrict the term "Mary Sue" to poorly written fanfiction.

I think I ♥ you. Not only for actually getting the point about Ouran, but especially for that last paragraph.

Tangent: That's why I think canon_sues is one giant vat of UR DOIN IT WRONG. Because almost every character qualifies, so everyone rushes to report the ones they hate. It's just a character bashing comm in disguise. :(

I must respectfully disagree on one small point. I have never been to canon_sues, and I can only imagine a lot of it is "WAH, SHE'S GOT A VAGINA, BUT SHE ISN'T ME AND PEOPLE LOVE HER!!!" but there are in fact, such things as canon sues.
Kilshandra of Anne McCaffery fame may be one, more or less, but not horribly.

The worst. The absolute worst. The one that made me believe in the phenomenom (doo-doo-de-doo-doo) is...*shudder*

She's a half-elf thing whose singing can magically change things. She's already gorgeous, but at one point, she does the impossible and the result is all of her "impurities" burning away and her being so lovely that people stop and stare. She constinantly assumes it must be because she's ugly or strange looking, despite being constantly told otherwise and confronted with mirrors, etc etc.
But all those are just vague examples. Quick descriptions can make anyone sound like a Mary Sue. To understand the true "I WANT TO STAB HER, WHY DO THOSE ASSASINATION ATTEMPTS NEVER SUCCEED?! WHY WHY WHY?!?!" you must read the book(s).

The sad thing is, I'd still say it's absolutely worth it, despite her painfully being the main character, because Achmed and Grunthor, her constant companions, are pure gold and I wish there would just be a book about Achmed already, because noone cares about Ashe.


Sorry, that rant got long. It's just every time people say that a Mary Sue should only be limited to fanfiction...there's really no other word for Rhapsody. Canon_Sue may be rarer than most people think, but they're absolutely real.

But I've recently decided that I'm going to now forgo using the term "Mary Sue" ever again, since nobody seems to be able to decide what the real criteria are, and it's getting so... political, for lack of a better term. Now I'm going to cite characters as "well written" or "poorly written", "realistic" or "unrealistic", because that's really mostly what it comes down to, isn't it?
