"Writing" and "reading" scratch different itches. It's not rocket science. The "write your own!" crew are being deliberately dense.

Agreed. The most charitable interpretation is that they want to be helpful so they're parroting advice they've heard elsewhere without thinking it through. So many people do that and don't seem to realize that's not very smart.

Thank you! I've made a similar comment on here before, but it's frustrating that so many people don't seem to get this. I love writing, but reading is such a different experience for so many reasons.

IMO, sometimes it's an unpleasant bootstraps argument. Even a mildly expressed wish for fic rubs people the wrong way (because how dare other people want things??) so their response is to tell them they should do it for themselves, knowing full well that's not a feasible solution for many yet hoping to shut that person up.
