To be honest, I'd rather they remain the same color they were as animals, even in cases when it isn't an actual human skin tone. For example Zazu would be John Oliver painted white and blue.

I agree with the first part of this, but I'm not sure about the second part. I think that might be too weird for me. I think I'd like Zazu as a pale white dude dressed in blue clothes, black hair, and maybe an orange baseball cap (to evoke the big orange beak). But IDK, I'd have to see both versions drawn out in order to know if either worked for me. I do like the idea of trying to stick with the tones and color-schemes of the original characters though.
