I really don't mind the current trend of portmanteau ship names, and in fact I actually like a lot of them! It's just that it seems like that's the only kind of ship name method still in use and I kind of miss the type of ship names that were popular back when I first got into fandom in the early 2000s. Stuff like Rocketshipping and Gymshipping from Pokemon, and stuff like the HMS Wolfstar and HMS Kittyhawk from Harry Potter and so on. Those were fun too, and I wish creative ship names like that would make a comeback.

My problem with portmanteaus is that my favorite pairings don't really lend themselves well to great ship names :p. Their names are either too short to properly smush together, or there's just not really a clever nickname for them, or anything of that sort.

But yeah, while I may not use those myself, I've definitely seen some creative, entertaining ones out there for other pairings. I'm with you in wanting to see more of that sort of thing make a comeback :).

I love original ship names, the only problem with them is that there can only be so many until they start to cross over. I've seen some change over the years as well, which can get confusing. I still prefer them heavily than just scrunching two names together though.
My favourite has to be KHR though, where every character was associated with a certain number take from their name. So much fun!
