I think they'd worked while married, divorced... but decided to say they were siblings to keep the surnames straight? And it was easier than answering questions about their divorce. Or something.

And the really funny thing was that people tried to check their background and found nothing because he changed his name to hers when they got married and nobody thought to check for "Meg White" marrying "John (Jack) [surname]" rather than "John (Jack) White" marrying "Meg [surname]".

Mind you, Jack White lies a lot in interviews, so the weird is often done on purpose.
