??

So like how long ago did the original trailer come out? Those are completely different designs in a way that makes me think this wasn't in some way planned? (/conspiracy)

The first one was around April 30th. If everything had gone well, the movie would have come out last Friday.

Conspiracy debunked!

see...that was absolutely my first thought upon seeing the new pictures. I have zero horses in this ballgame, but given how spot fucking ON the "new" Sonic looks, this had to have been their gameplan. They didn't massively fuck up an entire movie and have to reanimate the whole thing, they released teasers of a bad design to drum up controversial interest. I don't usually conspiracy theory but this is just too good to be true.

Yeah, like they already have something of a template with the sonic games/animation. While the original had a more realistic, aka creepy puppet vibe, going for it, it clearly wasn't Sonic. It just doesn't add up quite right...

NAYRT: It's Hollywood, and every new production wants to do something "fresh" with their character designs. Which often involves aggressive triangulation by a marketing committee. So we end up with some pretty bad 3D designs like Paddington, Smurfs, The Chipmunks, The Addams Family, and Scoob this week.

It probably doesn't help that we're talking about a video game movie, a genre that's filled with flops and bombs. I find it much more plausible that hundreds of people invested thousands of labor hours and millions of dollars into making a bad movie, because we get two or three every weekend.

Moving the release date costs Paramount millions of dollars in broken distribution contracts, is going to hurt box office revenue, and screws over anyone who hoped to roll out licensed merchandise in time for Black Friday.

Not to mention pulling off that kind of hoax when you have over a hundred people involved in production is probably impossible.

I'm trying to figure out how this conspiracy is supposed to work to a degree that justifies the enormous costs. Are audiences really supposed to think, "the first trailer looked like an edgy cash-grab, but they redid the animation so now it's one of the most promising movies of the fallwinter!"
