Well, if they didn't get a chance to see Wizard of Oz (1939), that's probably the most referenced American work after the Bible.

Little Walter, Muddy Waters, Dick Dale, and Link Wray set the stage for music with distortion.

The Beatles are probably as big as Wizard of Oz in terms of cultural references.

After that, just cherry-picking musical movements:
