I can’t find the source of this, but I read somewhere that a movie can’t be smarter than its smartest bad guy. I generally find this to be true. (See also: Corpse Bride, another afterlife movie with a villain who’s an idiot.)

How is Ernesto an idiot?

The two things I can remember are killing someone to steal music that he would probably have handed over freely, and falling for the old “they were broadcasting my villain monologue to the public” trick. I think there was something else that bothered me while I was watching, but I don’t really remember.

What bothered me was that even if this family completely banned music, Ernesto's version of "Remember Me" was suuuuper popular, and especially so in their very town. Mama Coco never once heard it on the radio or something, even in passing, or heard anyone mention it at all, for almost a CENTURY?

The kid's a grave robber.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
It was his great grandfather’s.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
It was who he thought was his great grandfathers, kid was wrong. You don't see me digging up my grand papa for the family jewels, or more accurately some random rich guy who I want to be my great grandfather.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 01:59 am (UTC)(link)

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
He didn't know that.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Still grave robbery.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
Plenty of paleontology and archaeology is technically grave robbery. Guys, the dead DON'T CARE.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it is. But when you're some kid breaking into the guys grave only to steal a precious (highly valued) artifact for his own personal use. There isn't much archeology to be dealt with here.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-14 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
Right, but that doesn't change the fact that it is, in fact, grave robbery.

I love Coco for a bunch of personal reasons, but I can understand why some people don't. I know Up is pretty beloved and that beginning scene made a lot of people sad, but it was kinda meh for me.

I don’t like Coco either, but mostly because I found the kid’s voice/accent to be grating.
