108: They could always set the fic in a place without a social security number, which I think is one of those US things. (Don't quote me on that though.)

I think the point isn't so much what you're suggesting as it is more...the fic writer taking the time to think through possible problems and addressing them in the fic itself, if that makes sense. So setting it in a place where less ID would be needed to live a life like you're suggesting would be one way of getting around the problem. Or having someone obtain black market identification or play up the amnesiac card or whatever.

Japan does not use Social Security numbers. In fact, he hasn't done anything requiring proof of identity yet.

I didn't know that. Still, he's going to need some kind of way of proving his identity when he wants to rent an apartment and get a bank account and so on, right? Unless he's going to be Hikaru's kept man for the rest of his life.

*laughs* I know what's going to happen, but it's not my place to tell you. However, yes, if ontogenesis makes Sai get his own bank account or rent his own apartment, rest assured, I will make sure she addresses this, but she's always been good at thinking of little details.

I hope you've been paying attention to the level of detail that _is_ actually present in the story?
