They do both have a different feel, but I can see where the OP would draw up similarities in characterization, aside from the title screen thing.

I guess I just see more of characters other than the main getting some attention in The Mentalist. They may not manage to get things done, but they get attention that isn't a byproduct of the main... being immature/a jerk/what-have-you. And I'm just going to give up on this train of thought now, since I can't seem to explain myself.

Yeees. I agree with this so hard. Like, they have their own stories and their own lives that actually come up other than when it has to do with what the main character is needling them about it. You're making sense, I swear.

I'm so glad something in it made sense. :D ... In general, though, there's a reason I'm looking forward to new Mentalist episodes and have given up on House. :/
