I also don't know what people consider relevant. Instead of scattershot, why not just answer questions? Besides, I don't know what people would consider a matter of course and what people would consider as very different (and therefore question the absence/presence of, in fic).
I will admit that Americans are not the only ones in the world who use Social Security numbers, but other countries don't always call them that, either. The SSN was never meant to be a national ID, though function creep has led to this.
However, since my attitude is obviously wrong, I'll just stop for now. I _will_ provide facts and explain things, but I need to know what you want explained first.

In any case--I try to make a distinction between "national ID" and "social security number", because it's that sort of conflation that led to the SSN becoming a de facto ID in the first place.
