In my days of trying to make friends on LJ, sometimes I would follow people back to their personal journals from comms and forums and mailing lists and such (and these were people posting things like cosplay photos on their personal LJs and linking to it in more public spaces, so it's not like I didn't have a reason to visit their personal journals) only to get these weird, kind of terse replies if I left a (positive) comment. I'd feel weird about friending people under those circumstances, so I wouldn't and they didn't friend me, and then it would seem like not long after more and more people were making their journals friends only. I couldn't help but wonder at the timing. It was frustrating, because these people would talk about how many wonderful friendships they made online, but it felt like "Oh, sorry, not you. I already have enough friends."
