I read the manga before the anime came out, and the death feels even more sudden because there's no atmosphere buildup like the anime added. I was sure L has a trick up his sleeve, so didn't believe it at first. Only when they started talking about his funeral did it finally sink in.

The post-L story is definitely weaker, but I loved Light so carried on.

Yes, but I didn't make the secret. But Light had a dramatic death scene and L didn't so I can see why they used it.

Nayrt but because of the pic, I misread the secret as being about Light and was surprised no one was calling out how little patience a reader would have to drop it that close to the end (or how much patience they had for Light!)...

I misread it too! I never actually got very far in Death Note but through pop culture osmosis I know about both characters' deaths, and was confused because I didn't know the manga went on after Light died... took reading a few of the replies to figure out the secret wasn't actually about Light.

it was clear the only reason he was killed off was for shock because they had to introduce his clone (but even more of a mega genius because more smarter makes for more better storytelling!) to finish the series. i did end up reading the rest eventually but tbh i needn't have bothered, it was dumb and boring
