I'm biased because Birds of Prey was the first comic series I really got into, but I agree.

I've mostly read her as Oracle and she's Oracle in the Arkham games, which are basically perfection to me (they're among my favourite non-comic Batman adaptions.) So I do actually lean more toward Oracle Vs Batgirl.

I think this is actually a pretty common opinion? Either way, Oracle's the best.

Stories about Barbara as Batgirl didn't have a lot to say that wasn't said by other characters; which isn't to say that there are no good stories, or that they were stories that shouldn't be told, but what I remember for the most part was the superhero kid with the civilian authority parent and that's a dynamic that has so many examples. Granted, not as many of the kids in these stories were girls, but still.

Barbara as Oracle involved Barbara displaying positive coping methods to deal with a highly traumatic event, and then adjusting to her new normal, and then Barbara as Oracle was ridiculously fucking badass as superhero support, oh my god. And - I could be remembering this wrong - being Oracle wasn't ultimately a "consolation prize" for not being able to be Batgirl, it was a role Barbara took genuine pride and pleasure in.

Having Barbara leap back into the opportunity to be Batgirl again seemed dismissive and disingenuous and I was disappointed in it, to say the least. Although it is possible I am misremembering things. But yeah.

tl;dr: ORACLE FUCK YEAH

One of the first comics I was into was Suicide Squad, which is where the transformation into Oracle happened, so I'm probably biased but Oracle was fucking amazing.

YES. Suicide Squad was amazing and Babs was fucking amazing in it. I read it before The Killing Joke even, so I was a bit out of the loop, but it was still great.

So is she going back to being Batgirl, or are they just re-telling her story from the beginning?

I agree 100%, OP!
