Zuko's redemption failed the minute he decided to do everything because of 'destiny' rather than making the change on his own merit.

I'm not familiar with Avatar - were Zuko's actions actually because of destiny, or did he decide that destiny was telling him to do certain things?

He was already wavering when he found out that his maternal grandfather was the Avatar too, and that seemed to give him the final push to break free of his paternal influences.
