105. Well, it's kind of understandable why they think that, considering that Ahiru (SPOILER). It doesn't change the fact that Ahiru couldn't have had a happy ending (at least with Mytho) in any event, but it does explain some of the Rue-hate in the fandom.

What made her happy, though (the whole series) was being able to help people. Wanting to do so is why she became Princess Tutu. When Drosselmeier came to her, she was thinking about how she wanted to help Mytho, not how she wanted his love.

She didn't want Mytho's love. She didn't love Mytho, she mistook her feelings all along. She did care for him, but in the weight of the world, it has always been Fakir for whom she was able to fight for (even in season 1, it's Fakir's "sacrifice" who awakes her).

Mytho was like a fantasy, nothing else, he was an idealization to keep with her role as Princess and denying her real self. Escapism she used to hide her insecurity and fear of being just a duck. Ahiru's a very complex and beautiful character like everyone in the series.

At the end of the series, Ahiru didn't fight for Mytho, she did it for hers and Fakir's happiness first and foremost. She never loved Mytho, she admired him (as is stated in the official relationship charts, Rue's feelings for Mytho are love and Ahiru's admiration). She cared for him, but was never able to sacrifice herself for him and questioned her feelings.

Ahiru, LIKE Fakir and Rue, used Mytho to be happy in a fairytale role she was unwilling to let go (ironically, the first one to let go and act selflessly was the most selfish prior, Rue). That was the problem at the ending, she had all the right to fear being alone and overlooked as a duck (don't forget her dream reflecting her fears: losing Fakir and that Fakir/Rue/Mytho forget about her. None about them was about losing Mytho romantically). Who came to the rescue? Fakir. Fakir told her he'll be with her and they should be themselves.

She's a human, flawed and beautiful girl who fought for her happiness too. She also fought for their happiness but after she knew she'll be happy too.

It's an inversion of the Ugly Duckling. The Duckling never turned into a swan to be loved, she found love by remaining a duck. A beautiful metaphorical message for the young audience it was targeted (ditto by Rue's happy ending).

Ahiru was a duck, she was odd as a girl (and she was never Princess Tutu), her fears and insecurity about being a duck was because she felt nobody would accept her like that and she was wrong. What is more happy than finding somebody who loves you for what you really are? Not for what you aren't or you pretend to be?

Maybe it wasn't happy for the fangirls who project themselves in Ahiru and missed the whole point: If Ahiru would have ended up with Mytho, she would be fulfilling an unhealthy and shallow Mary Sue Fantasy (like the Manga pretty much) which is against the point of her character built.
