114 Well, one of them is dead if that helps.

122 There will always be a big segment of fandom who adore misanthropic but highly intelligent male assholes, for more reasons than I care to talk about here. They will find many excuses for their bad behavior, usually having to do with how we should all feel sorry for their emotional insecurity. Severus Snape, Rodney McKay, Gil Grissom, Gregory House, heck even Keith Olbermann to a certain extent--they're all the same guy, and the same kinds of people write piles and piles of slash about them, usually shipping them with the hot guy or the narrative prize. So you know, if you don't like those characters, you'll have to steer clear, because it isn't going to change any time soon.

By the way, they often hate the same characteristics in a female character, usually calling her a Mary Sue. Not always by any means, but often.

124 Because he also loves young skinny guys? I dunno, Simon is kinda hot in his growly way.

By the way, hypocrisy police: Simon isn't misanthropic; he's actually quite a sentimental softy. And I don't think of Ryan as a narrative prize. Or even that hot, for that matter.

137 Then say it, dude. The aged-up fanart is pretty hot.

138 Dude, like, define your terms upfront kthx? Shows that are not action shows are better with lots of dialogue--comedies and romances for instance. (Also, dialogue != monologue.) Dialogue doesn't mean Basil Exposition; it means two people talking to each other. Old films with lots and lots of dialogue are the best things ever. Action isn't like, ALL THINGS EVER. Jeez.

I'm specifically talking about animation, sorry for the misunderstanding.

I thought you were clear it was about anime, fwiw.

122 OP

I'm annoyed with the fans, not the character. I love Rodney - I just get sick of people making excuses for his behavior which really is unacceptable at times and needs to be called on. And I get sick of seeing my other favorite characters being bashed because people think someone is being mean to poor Rodney.

That's one of those weird things about fandom, that people can't stand anyone criticizing their "baby", no matter who it is. It's tiresome; I like characters because they're flawed, and here are people who hoot and holler about Mary Sues in fic, making a Mary Sue out of an interesting canon character.

I know ... I know... really this is multiple fandoms worth of frustration needing to be vented safely.

I've also never understood the appeal of getting attached to just ONE character above all others - how can people enjoy the show that way? Like you I love the characters because they're flawed and I like ALL of them for their flaws. If I don't at least like all of the main characters of a show I stop watching it rather quickly.

122) I think you nailed it. Something about highly intelligent but socially flawed men is very erotic. It's talent plus emotional vulnerablity all in one tidy package. Though I disagree at least personally about the female being hated for it. Right now I'm completely and utterly enamorored with Tara from True Blood. She's smart but her arrogance and distain of people makes it almost impossible for her to hold down a job or have a relationship. But under that arrogance and smart ass talking is a vulnerability that is utterly sexy to the core. Also, she's damn fucking hot. I agree that sometimes people like the women for it, though I will say unfortunately rarely in male-lead action genre. True Blood has a female lead, and I find that this makes a huge difference. Fans of female-led shows tend to not be the "I hate all but two female characters ever" types. I'm not sure a character like that would go over as well in SGA, and look how mean almost everyone but the GSR fans were to Sara in CSI fandom.

Well, we rarely see arrogant but smart women in shows without a strong female main cast. Usually if the main cast is male (with perhaps a token female), the female characters are very superficial and not particularly well thought through. If they are intellegent they tend to follow the "wise-mother" stereotype, where they are mostly unflappable straight-men, watching the men flail around with a raised eyebrow and infinite patience. We rarely see them having any solo ambitions or surprising opinions. They tend to be rather boring.

Those who are arrogant are also flat -- designed to be hated in a kind of a binary approach to characterization. Good women are good in all ways all the time. Bad women are bad in all ways all the time.

I love Tara! And what you're saying here just made me think that unlike somebody like House Tara seems aware of her problems. I mean, I can't imagine House saying, as Tara did, that she just isn't good at being with someone, or even considering getting an exorcism. It just seems like a slight difference between the male and female version here. The woman is being more openly vulnerable than the crusty male.
