101) BARGE IN! Try a friending meme, comment on other peoples posts. Though it also helps if you have something to say once you get people's attention. For that, consider: Writing fic, do art, meta, lead discussions, make icons, compile recs. Do those things and people will start seeking you out. Even if you have no artistic talent, recs and meta are always appreciated.

117) I tried, but I simply can't read this. Between the color, the font and the busy background, it's just impossible.

122) Of course he's an arrogant hypochondriac with self-esteem issues. That's part of his charm. Some people's flaws just get more irritating as time goes on, for some reason his grow on you and just make him more adorable.

125) Everyone goes through the sue phase. One of these days you'll be able to laugh about your early efforts, knowing there's no shame in being a new writer. Go back to the fandom and write some new fic, fandom will remember you for the new fic not the old.

138) Dude. Anime watchers enjoy a good intellectual meta as much as any other fandom, don't be saying we don't analyze our shows for their flaws.

Thing is I DO love Rodney - he's the reason I've kept watching the show for as long as I have.

I just hate how his so called fans make excuses for his behavior.

I guess I haven't noticed anyone saying that Rodney isn't arrogant, but yeah if I saw someone doing that I'd raise an eyebrow.

What annoys me is when in fics they suddenly morph Rodney into this smooth slick guy with no flaws at all. I'm like, hey I came for Rodney fic, who the hell is this guy.

It's not that they say he isn't arrogant - it's that they say that he's arrogant because he has such low self esteem that he just acts that way as a cover.

Which I'll agree could be true to some extent - just not to the extremes I've seen people take it. And that still doesn't make any of his obnoxious behaviors acceptable.

Well, I guess I disagree with you because Rodney's behavior is in line with someone with extreme low self-esteem. He spends his entire time trying desparately to prove his worth to everyone he encounters, as if he's certain if he doesn't no one will want him. This is actually common with people who are completely full of themselves that they are at heart not confident at all and it's overcompensation.

Truly confident people don't need to blow their own horn, because they know that other people can see their worth. Poor Rodney not only screams it every available minute, but he also does pull off miracles. Two doctorates, the head of science, and he still worries that the people he works with won't notice his achievements unless he tells them.

Also, no one I know of is claiming his obnoxious behaviors are acceptable, but it's not the kind of flaw that's at all easy to get rid of.

Plus when things go badly, the outer layer of arrogance drops pretty quick and the more vulnerable, honest Rodney shows up.

It still doesn't make his behavior acceptable. And it doesn't mean he's secretly a nice person under all of it. He is an obnoxious asshole who does sometimes need to be told to shut up.

Actually, I believe episodes like McKay and Mrs Miller and Tao of Rodney are pretty good examples that Rodney IS actually a nice person underneath it all.

Maybe at this point in time he just acts like that, because if he did any differently people would wonder who is this guy? And what did they do to Rodney?

If you look from season 1 to now, he's made a hell of an improvement. In season 1 he was a complete sarcastic asshole, with NO room for being nice. Now he's pretty mellow and only makes sarcastic comments when they are begging for it.

I've never made excuses for his behaviour. I'm pretty sure the appeal for me is that I'm exactly like Rodney most of the time.
I can understand not liking the character though, a lot of people don't like me. *shrugs*

I do like Rodney though - I just get tired of people making excuses. Even the low self esteem thing only works so far. It's more the overly angsty fics where Rodney is reduced to a crying baby because someone hurt his feelings and someone else has to comfort him that are the problem.

I do actually think Rodney CAN be a nice person if he really really wants to - but I also think he really is an ass most of the time because it's easier.

Look - I get what you're trying to say, even though I don't agree completely. I'm just so freaking tired of hearing how horrible other characters are for being mean to poooooor Rodney when Rodney is usually just been an ass to that character or some other situation where Rodney is just as much at fault as the other characters.

His low self esteem doesn't give him the right to steamroll over others feelings nor does it make his feelings more important than other character's

When have these fans suggested people were being mean to him?
I only ever noticed an avoidance or actual dislike of Rodney after Trinity. And that didn't even last very long.

They teased him on occasion about weight, but that's all I can think of, and there's no reason to get all defensive about that.

Try after every single freaking episode where some character DARES to raise their voice at Rodney or suggest they don't like him or don't fall over themselves thanking him for every little thing, or naming their baby after John instead of him... There's always a handful of of people who think Rodney is being treated unfairly and it got old very quickly.

Well, ignore those people. Very few people I talk to say those things.

Ahh I know - this was more me blowing off 5 years worth of pent up frustration at some Rodney fans than anything else....

Oh hell no. I love seeing Rodney getting spanked for his behavior. Metaphorically, though hell if someone wrote it physically happening, I'd get into that too.

I also secretly wish that if people really feel that Rodney's feelings are being hurt that they should write a story where HE tells the other characters off - not let another character do it for him. I think he is capable of defending himself from the others when he wants to. That scene in Tao of Rodney comes to mind.

People seem to forget that he can give as good as he gets from the other characters.

Low self esteem doesn't HAVE to mean whimpy little kid who cries himself to sleep every night because people weren't super duper nice to him, does it?

And yes, if someone is badmouthing him, he does defend himself. Rodney wouldn't be where he is today if he was the cry himself to sleep kind of person.

You know, though, this kind of crap happens with every fandom and every character. There seems to be a type of shipper out there who just loves to see their favorite character reimagined as a total spineless emo cutter just languishing in hopes of some big strong top to come and anally penetrate some worth back into his life. As though self-worth comes in handy suppository form. God I hate those fics.

EXACTLY! Why can't we see more of THAT Rodney in the episode aftermath fics where people think he's been wronged? THAT's the Rodney I love dearly. The one who takes what comes his way and keeps comming back for more.

Not the whimpy little kid that a lot of his fans seem to make him out to be. Not the one who goes crying to someone because another character has been mean. Not the one who hides away in his lab avoiding everyone until he passes out from hunger because he's to scared to go to the mess for food.

You know, though, this kind of crap happens with every fandom and every character.

I know - this fandom has just been the "straw to break the camels back" so to speak. *shrug*
