I just have never believed his allergies/hypoglycemia were real. He's to much of a hypochondriac for it to be real.

That and all of the fics where he has a bad allergic reaction or hypoglycemic episode only served to make me wonder why the hell he would have ever been allowed to go to Atlantis. If they're really THAT bad he's too much of a liability no matter how smart he is. Especially in the first year when they didn't have access to Earth.

That does make sense, although I'm sure it's implied that half the stuff he says he has is just made up as an excuse to get out of something, other than his obvious citrus allergy (which doesn't really affect his work).

The other part of the problem is the way the character is set up. He's so CLEARLY meant to be the comic relief of the show... I love the guy really but I just can't take him seriously...

He's had his serious moments that showed he can act like a human being, but otherwise, if anyone takes his crap too seriously, they're just crazy.
