Of all the ills in the world that I'd like to attribute to the Internet, I'm not sure this is one of them. I'd say that studios have gotten very afraid of offending people so they're playing it safer than ever.

Don't know about media, but there's a lot to do with design that has been rendered very samey thanks to Instagram and other places on the internet.

Maybe a little.

It can be a bit of an echo chamber at times and popular stuff does tend to get more popular much more quickly, but there will always be people that march to the beat of their own drummers (and not just hipsters, either).

It certainly plays a role. A major role. Mass media on steroids.

It's also very far from the only thing.

Depends on where you look, imo. People have been lying to fit in since forever, so I'd say it's more the absorption of society than a particular internet trait.
