My thoughts.

I will take nighttime medicine, but during the day, if I have something I need to do, I will generally avoid anything but a pain reliever because of how much cold medicine messes with my focus. And I think there are a fair few people out there that have similar issues.

And I know you were probably just using it as an example, but for Supernatural, where they have a bunch of weapons and something dangerous could just literally appear, something that might mess with their focus could be something they would avoid. It also wouldn't be out of character if being sick was something their father either implied or outright stated was a weakness and should be powered through. And that would be my reasoning if it was something I was writing. (But also there might be in the back of my mind the fact that they each have just shaken off many serious injuries and maladies and even death, so I'm not sure how seriously and realistically I would approach a cold or the like in fic.)

Many people don't have the luxury of sick days (or the desire to spread plague all over), so taking a day-time cold med is just sensible. I know I've had to a number of times.

And yes, Show was an example, but they have down time, and day-time meds are...for day-time. I'm pretty susceptible to a lot of chemicals, and don't take much of anything, but those don't bother me, and don't bother a lot of people.

Frankly, having a raw throat, a hacking cough, running nose, and a fever that gives you chills is a lot more distracting than not.
