I think Lavi works better as a side character. I would like if he got his own interesting arc again - maybe foray into his backstory and life as a bookman - but I don't think it could stay compelling for as long.

And actually the MILLENIUM EARL was supposed to be the main character, but Hoshino was told it wouldn't work because it was too dark.

In the 4th volume of the D.Gray-man Manga Hoshino said that Lavi was originally going to be the main character of a series called Book-Man, but I think that maybe she wanted to make a different story with him. I never heard of this thing with the Millennium Earl, is it just not just a rumor? even in her oneshot Zone (aka the dgrayman pilot) he's the villain. But then again maybe she had 2 stories ideas: one with the Millennium Earl exploring the akumas and the noah family and one with Lavi and the bookmen and decided to merge them

Ugh. I might have gotta my facts confused, but I could have sworn she had a newer interview that said this. Looked to see if it was discussed in the subreddit, and I think I got my wires crossed.
