Secret 2 but reverse

What are some characters that sounded horribly Mary Sue but in context actually work?

I think a lot of Star Wars characters because they are based on archetypes, but they end up working. Same with some of Tolkien's characters.

- Newcomer who enters a well established storyline
- Instantly becomes the center of attention
- Not Like The Other Girls
- Always wins
- Wins because of luck and/or because she's The Chosen One
- Though it probably helps A BIT that she's better than all the boys at all the sports

True, when I was in middle school I loved Utena the show but hated Utena the character because she was "too perfect" (I don't think I knew the word "Mary Sue" then because if I had I would have called her one). It wasn't until I re-watched it in college that I realized I had overlooked so much of the point.

Not a well-known character, but Simon Serrailler, a character in a series of mystery novels, always struck me as a bit of a Stu. He's an amazing detective (not rare in mysteries I'll admit.) His hobby is art and he's amazing at that too. He's extremely good-looking and charming to women and they fall in love with him frequently. He works anyway for me because some of the characters (especially his sister) seem to think he's a little annoyingly perfect too and will puncture his ego at times. Also because the series is usually pretty good at balancing out his role with stories about the other characters.

Peter Wimsey could not be more a Mary Sue but it's completely fine because the series is very charming and well-written and good.

Also, Lester Freamon from The Wire absolutely 100% is a Mary Sue but it's well executed enough that nobody actually notices so I suppose that technically counts as "working"

Usagi Tsukino.

Most long-running fighting anime protagonists start out this way, but if the series goes on long enough they usually become Mary Sues for real and don't work anymore.

Vyse from the game Skies of Arcadia is horribly Mary Sue all the way through, but still works because the entire tone of the game is so optimistic about human nature in everybody.

OMG yes, Vyse~ With the tone of the game you just can't hate him.

Probably only because someone mentioned the Falcone's, but Sofia Falcone from the Gotham verse.
She has everyone wrapped around her little finger, and I hated her at first for her Mary Sue tendencies, but after the course of her arc I began to really respect her for her ability to basically be a Mary Sue. I mean, at that point I was gunning for /anyone/ who stood against Gordon, and she managed to be the most effective at putting him in his place. Things that bothered me previously, like her being the only one not to eat the meal that contained human remains, and getting everyone to do what she wanted even if they knew she was manipulating them, became things that made me like her all the more because it was exactly how she planned it to happen.

Man, I thought I was biased because I already liked Crystal Reed, but Sofia was so much fun to watch. +1
