I didn't know how to cook the basics when I left home because my mother had me on a strict diet from the age of 11 and wouldn't let me in the kitchen in case I ate something. This is probably an unusual case, but there's reasons beyond "being an idiot"! But I wasn't proud of not being able to cook.

Fair enough. Though if someone who doesn't know how to boil pasta can't comprehend the instructions for how to boil pasta then we're back to "How is that possible?" I don't care if they overcook it the first time or undercook it the first time; even simple things about cooking aren't always obvious immediately. But if someone is unable to comprehend the steps of making pasta...I'm not really sure how that's possible?

I'm sorry your mom put you on a crazy diet. That sounds awful.

The first time I cooked pasta I didn't know you needed to occasionally stir it! (And thanks, but I'm fine now - I eventually worked out that I was completely normal, it was my mother who had the eating disorder.)
