I think I'd be down for that. Stories where nothing happens are always going to be very hit-and-miss, but if the dialogue and prose is good, it's worth taking a bet on.

And honestly, if a story where nothing happens *is* good, I'm usually really into it! It works a lot for me. IDK it's just... nice.

Sounds like the sane reason I like to watch chill slice of life anime where nothing really happens sometimes. When there’s a lot of drama in real life it can be relaxing to have something to sit back with where you don’t have to worry about high stakes and drama.

IKR, to some degree. The most popular writer in one of my fandoms writes the most tropy AU you can imagine, with the same setup for the same pairing every. damn. time. Even completely ignoring the same side characters and substituting them with OCs in every. damn. fic.

It's not that I don't enjoy her fic. She writes passably, and pretty IC. It's just that she's the definite BNF on the fic side, in a fandom so small that most people posting will be lucky to get five comments on AO3 - and the thing is, there's some fic around that's a lot better, but pretty much ignored.

I'd love to see her take some of her skill and dig into CANON, not barf out yet another vampire/werewolf/boyband/coffeeshop/soulmate AU with the same kind of pining and the same kind of dumb misunderstandings happening in ALL OF THEM.

Pining and misunderstandings scratches an itch. Being able to write effective pining has a quality all its own, to paraphrase Stalin.

Well, yeah - I like her fic just fine, for easy reading. But I feel bad for the authors who write so much better, but are ignored in favour of the same story being regurgitated in ten different incarnations.

It just bugs me to say "Writer X is Better than Writer Y" when clearly there are some elements where Writer Y is better than Writer X.

Being the most popular =/= being the best. In the fandom, being the most popular usually comes down to how often you update, interaction with your readers, genre of fic, and absolutely which pairings you write and how much smut there is.

Tolkien is back and writing fanfic?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-26 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Ahhh, you're full of it

(Anonymous) 2019-11-26 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
"My fandom is all doing fanfic wrong!" That's really all you needed to put. I totally get being annoyed at not fitting in with your fandom but I think it's kinda shitty to say the problem is a BNF author instead of admitting to yourself you're the odd one out.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-26 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Which you have no proof of at all. BNFs can be shitty writers. And people.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-26 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, taste is subjective, and maybe I wouldn't agree with them about this author or maybe I would. But it's perfectly fine to be of the opinion that a particular person's writing isn't that good.

And OP gives specific points of criticism. They're not just showing up here saying, "Everybody else is wrong to like this author and I'm right to not like them. Bah."

(Anonymous) 2019-11-26 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
You sound like someone who writes boring meandering blah fic.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-26 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I just want to read a fic where nothing really happens except that my ship ends up together. I've read some nice ones and some bad ones, but my enjoyment of them depends on the quality of the writing and if the content of the fic hits all my buttons. And if it's got boring smut, I just skip it.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-26 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you, OP. There have always at least a couple of extremely popular writers in my main fandoms who I just find highly overrated. Whether it's that their work is bogged down by the characters' endless navel-gazing, or they're just really bad (IMO) at writing conclusions that feel satisfying, or they just write really long smut scenes that hit all the wrong kinks and emotional beats for me.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-26 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'd love to know the fandom, but I absolutely get why you wouldn't want to say, OP.

For my money, there are plenty of great fics where nothing happens and you just spend some time in a character's head... but there are also a lot of bad ones! Sometimes there's something that a lot of people in a fandom are craving, and it might not be good but scratch that itch. I've been in a couple fandoms where the big thing everyone liked was just... eughhh for me.

I know this isn't me but I'm guilty of this at times I think. At least my stories are really short though.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-26 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel ya OP, over & over I'm reading a rec for an AMAAAAAZing fic and when I crack it open, like Peggy Lee I ask "Is that all there is?" I guess different tastes & all that, but it does baffle me how readers can be so enthusiastic about truly g*d-awful fic.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-27 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I so badly want to know who this is. LOL!

But seriously, I find this a lot in a few of the fandoms that I read for (looking at you, Pride and Prejudice) where I can't believe some of the "popular" fics.
