I have this problem as well. It's not quite unbearable, but it's close (and also due to mental illness). Fortunately books also work for me, and I'm a voracious reader. It took years before my husband accepted I REALLY DO need to read a book before bed, to settle my mind so I can sleep.

I feel you, OP. I need to have some music or a YouTube video playing while I do chores doing the day, or my thoughts overwhelm me

Oh, I get you, OP. For me, it's that my thoughts get really intrusive and I start to panic about things that I really shouldn't panic about, then I end up not doing anything useful. Podcasts, music, and the TV all help with that when I'm at home, but when I'm driving, I can only have music on. Podcasts just don't work at drowning out my thoughts when I'm driving.
