I do too. I think the more it seems that the world is filled with selfish, self-absorbed narcissists, the more moving heroic altruism feels.

(It's honestly why I've always loved Saint Seiya so much, despite its general melodramatic cheesiness.)

Doesn't even have to be the main character for me. That scene in Guardians of the Galaxy where the Nova Core pilots sacrifice themselves to give the Guardians more time gets me every time.

I hate self sacrifice. For the most part because it's usually done in an unnecessary and selfish way. Any storyline where a character must die to achieve anything is generally badly written or uninspired.
