Yeah, but it doesn't stop at ship level, does it? You have to enjoy the ship the ~right way~.

The incessant push for conformity has made the 2010s miserable. Hope to see some renegade spirit in the new decade. I do believe the tides will turn back.

DA

This. In some ways, it's even worse when the bullying and pressure to conform are coming from within your ship.

I'm hoping so too.

This mentality is in basically every fandom, and I hate it. You wouldn’t think the theme park/roller coaster fandom would have this issue, but it’s one of the worst echo chambers I’ve ever seen. (“You’re a bad enthusiast if you like X coaster more than Y coaster!” and so on.) I truly hope you’re right about things shifting.

This is totally off topic, but do you know of any forums similar to Theme Park Review that aren't TPR? I'd like to find an active amusement park community. I lurk on TPR, but I don't want to join and participate because the site owner is so off-putting.

I agree 100% about Robb being off putting. I know that there are a lot of park-specific forums (PointBuzz, KI Central, etc ) but I get my general stuff from the roller coaster subreddit! I think both Coaster Buzz and Coaster Force have their own forums but I’m not sure how active they are.

What is this golden age shit? When was the time when everyone was live and let live and no one fought?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-28 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody is saying that no-one fought or that everything was roses and sunshine. But it has gotten much, much worse and the live and let live has been pretty much kicked over board by people who think they can dictate how fandom is done "right" instead of these people being an annoying but ignorable tiny group.

Ship wars used to be over which ship was better and more canon, now people are screaming about how you're *insert buzzword here* if you like certain pairings or dislike others. Top/Bottom discourse used to be about preference, now it's about how problematic it is if you don't let the more feminine one top because you're enforcing heteronormative bullshit otherwise. Or how it's only right if they switch to show they view each other as equals.

People are calling people pedos if you like a pairing with an age gap, even if they are both fully functional adults. It was never a golden age where everyone got along, but things are so much worse now with people spewing radfem talking points and conservative rhetoric.

There was fighting, sure, but when LJ was the place for fandom, if you had good mods, they could ban the people causing trouble. It made fandom so much nicer when the wankers had to form their own comms for their circle-jerking hate. But now that fandom is primarily on Tumblr and Twitter, you can find that shit anywhere.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-28 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
ikr? fandom was never a peaceful place where we all got along and let everyone ship what they wanted. stupid amounts of wank happened in old fandom as it does now, you were just entirely reliant on mods to keep the peace. and i was on several comms where the mods ENJOYED the in-fighting and let it get to crazy personal-attack and death-baiting levels. it's not new.

and people were bringing 'woke' terminology into ship-arguments back then too, it was just less common. but this comm is obsessed with making out old fandom to be some Golden Age of wank-free fandom, and lol to that, it wasn't nicer, if people wanted to harass you THEY WOULD and you could do jack-shit about it. at least on tumblr+twitter i can block people so that's SOMETHING even if it isn't perfect.
