Actually, I'm kind of confounded by that as well. Wasn't that like the most optimistic cop show ever? Funny and light and featuring Leslie Nielsen? There's no way to make that dark without doing something insane, and even thinking about it makes my brain hurts.

Well, there's the whole thing where Vecchio goes to Vegas to work undercover as a mob boss. That couldn't possibly go wrong, could it? Oh, and before that, where Fraser's ex-lover comes back, sleeps with him, betrays him, shoots his half-wolf, makes him feel so worthless he betrays his best friend/partner, starts to run away with the villainess, gets shot in the back by said partner...

Or the one where Vecchio beats down Frankie Zuko in a show of courage after Fraser has been brutally beaten by Zuko's thugs. Or the one where Kowalksi and Fraser spend the whole episode wondering if Vecchio really murdered Frannie's stalker. Or the one where it looks like Vecchio might be a corrupt cop. Or the one where...

You get my point? Yes, it is a funny, funny show, full of magical realism and snark and, on two or three occasions only, Leslie Nielsen. But there's a lot more to it than that, and you can take pretty much any leaping off point you choose - darkfic, fluff, PWP, AU, crack - all those and more get to come out of the canon and the fandom is more interesting for it.

Due South actually had a lot of "dark" episodes. Um, can yon have spoilers for a show that ended ten years ago? If so, spoilers ahead. There was Victoria's Secret, where Fraser's bank-robber girlfriend came back, shot his dog, framed both him and his best friend and he was still going to run away with her. (Though, now that I think about it, that sounds more like a country song than darkfic.) Even the first Leslie Nielsen episode was pretty dramatic; his character was attempting to hunt down a criminal who had badly injured him years before. And those aren't the only darker episodes: the Deal, Bird in the Hand, Juliet is Bleeding, the Ladies Man, Good for the Soul, just to name a few.

Don't get me wrong, the show was always funny and all the characters were, more or less, good people. But it's not hard to find darkfic fodder.
