That's exactly why she's not in fact a great singer. She's a POWERFUL singer, but powerful and good are not the same things. Her range isn't that great, she can't really emote that well, all she can really do is belt (and belting is actually HORRIBLE for your voice and any voice coach will tell you not to do it because that is how you permanently damage your voice).

For those of us not in the know, could you give us an example, preferably via Disney Princess, of a good singer?

My brain goes to Jasmin, since she seems to have a good emotional range, but she was sung by Lea Salonga...

Or Esmeralda!

Like, is Megara's singer a good singer or a powerful singer or both?

Judy Kuhn's singing as Pocahontas is flawless in my book. Gorgeous tone, range, flexibility, acting, the whole enchilada.

The original voice of Aurora/Briar Rose was an operatic soprano, and you can really hear her technique and training in the first few notes she sings as the character wanders through the forest. Very impressive textbook work.

Megara's voice actress, Susan Egan, originated the role of Belle on Broadway and I don't hear anything fantastic or horrible about her singing technique. (She may have a touch too much of a belt, but nowhere near Idina's issues.) That being said, I love the unique sound of her voice. They could never use a voice double for her singing.

There's no such thing as a Disney Princess singer who hasn't had some kind of vocal training, the problem with Idina is that either she was trained badly and/or she has gotten very sloppy with her technique over the years. Singing voices are like car engines, they need constant tune-ups and maintenance, not to mention gentle handling. It doesn't help that she sacrifices proper technique for belting and boosting her volume. I'm honestly surprised she can still sing at all at this point in her career.

Above anon (who is vocally trained, I should add) seconding this. If you want an example of a song that is technically challenging to sing, "Just Around the Riverbend" is a perfect example. You need to have superb diction and a very tight control of your voice and breathing to be able to sing that one well.

Megara's singer has what I like to call a good Broadway voice. She's got power, but she's not belting the same way Idina is, though she does belt a bit at times. She's clearly got genuine vocal talent that isn't just JUST based on belting.

I was honestly cringing whenever Idina tried to hit a high note in "Let It Go" because she should not have been straining like that for those notes. "Let It Go" is not at all a stretch for the majority of female singers range-wise and the fact that she was having so much trouble was a sign of either how poorly-trained she is or how sloppy her technique is, like you said. If she hasn't wrecked her voice yet, she's certainly well on her way to doing so.
