Yugioh fandom is still going strong with the -shipping names ;) I think Pokemon fandom is also still using them.

ngl I hope we never stop using them. CharacterA/CharacterB is fine, and portmanteaus are fine (although they can get confusing in YGO), but the -shipping names are cute and nostalgic and I love them.

Yugioh is one of the fandoms where I tolerate and even prefer it, because the alternatives just don't work. Each series' protagonist has a name beginning with "Yu" so name smushing is impossible (especially considering the huge number of named characters over six series). And a lot of the characters have names that are translated differently or renamed entirely for the dub. If it wasn't for AO3's tag wranglers, searching for a single ship would be damn near impossible. "Puzzleshipping" is just so much easier to search than Yami/Yugi, Yami/Yuugi, Atem/Yugi, Yami Yuugi/Yuugi Mutou, etc.

Yeah, it can take a spreadsheet to keep them straight if you try to read a lot of different ships, but if you go anywhere other than AO3, it's the only efficient way to find stuff.

Yep, yep. There's just way too many names, and enough of them shorten to the same thing for it to get super confusing (is RyoKai Ryoga/Kaito or Ryou/Kaiba, or hey why not Ryoken/Kaiba?). Not to mention, waaaay back in the day (and still today in Japanese fandom and maybe sometimes still in English fandom?), you'd also have to search for all the iterations of Yuugi/Dark Yuugi, because that was different than Dark Yuugi/Yuugi.

Japanese fandom has it so much easier tbh because all of those ships use different kanji so they're actually distinct, and they also don't have to deal with the dub names...

But yeah, AO3 isn't too bad thanks to the wranglers, but I can't imagine trying to navigate tumblr, for instance, without the ship names. I definitely prefer only having to track one tag over...well, my OTP could have at least 10 if you account for spelling, alternate names, and order. not that it's popular enough for that to ever be a problem...

although there are some ships where I honestly do use the portmanteaus more often, like mizakai and bekumiza, but they're also not confusing ones lmao
