153. They can pull off cosplay really well, actually, if they just choose the right characters and make the costumes in a way that is flattering.

It's the same with any cosplayer -- you will only win at a cosplay if you choose the right kinds of characters. You could be gorgeous normally, but if you keep choosing people that look nothing like you, you're going to fail.

The problem is that most of them just don't realize this.

How awesome a cosplay is depends on a combination of how good the outfit is and how well the character/outfit/everything was chosen to suit the cosplayer.

I tend to cut cosplayers a little more slack in my estimation, though, if there aren't very many characters that fit their body type, so long as they've put some effort into taking that into consideration (i.e., not chosen the most revealing possible outfit if they're the wrong size to pull it off).

It sucks that it seems as though there's not a huge diversity out there of characters of varying body shapes. Everyone seems to be tall, thin/lithe... but there's one thing I do believe: there's an anime (and I only say this because I think anime cosplay tends to be more prevalent than any other kind) about EVERYTHING. That said, I think there probably IS a character that could work for every single person on the planet if they wanted to, it's just a matter of finding out who that character is, more about the fandom, and if you like them enough to cosplay.

And if not-- well, that's when you get crazy with the accessories and wigs!

So who does a fat person cosplay as? Jigglypuff? Totoro? How many fat anime characters are there out there?

I believe a costume should fit, but I also believe you can remake skinny characters' outfits for bigger sizes.

I'm overweight, and I've cosplayed quite well as Kankurou and Chouji so far, and I'm working on Jiraiya next. If you look carefully, you don't necessarily need FAT characters -- solidly- or even normally-built characters who wear loose, flowing clothing are fine. It's really not hard.

Although I'd like to add that in a lot of cases, people are just dressing up for the fun of it. I honestly don't give that much of a shit if I look too much like the character I'm cosplaying as. I want to have as close to the right costume as possible, yes, and the right hair color/any accessories (glasses, etc), but I don't care if I'm not the same body size or shape at all. I'm in it for the fun of doing it. I don't really see how cosplaying suddenly became a hobby that fandom's decided it's their job to sit around and judge in the first place.
