101. I think you should tell this to your friend, no matter how you go about it. Anonymously is fine, but a F!S isn't good enough. She can ignore this. You need to tell her in a way that she can't ignore.

107. I've always disliked Chobits without having read it because the outward concept of it didn't appeal at all to me. I've still never seen it and didn't even know what it was about. But your secret--specifically that he gave up sex and a 'real realation' to be with a computer--makes me actually interested in it. Why are those bad things? Would you say someone who has a long-distance relationship is wasting their time, even if they never get to have sex with their partner, and only get to talk to them over the computer or, maybe, telephone? Do you think people who can't/don't have sex are unhappy? I don't know how it's presented in the show, but I can completely see how that's romantic. Sex is not everything. Love presents itself in different ways. Loving a "robot" is just as valid as a "real" relationship. I am sorry you are to shallow to realize that.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
You missed the point.

Having a long-distance relationship is not the same as having a relationship with SmarterChild.

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm under the impression that Chii is a bit more intelligent and humanistic than SmarterChild.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Your argument is still faulty. You're comparing a relationship method (long distance; over phones, computer, etc) to a relationship in which only one party has the capacity for love and the formation of an actual relationship. It's apples to oranges, unless you are assuming that the emotions of people who communicate over the computer are digitized and disingenuous somehow. You're also wrong by turning the conversation to sex, since we know that people in LDRs can get around that and there's no reason to believe people wouldn't have sex with robots.

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess my opinion of love varies, especially when you're dealing with something like a futuristic world where the robots may or may not be capable of love. I don't know the characters at all, so I honestly have no idea what my opinion would be if I actually read the manga, but if she's programmed to love I don't see why that is . . . well, unacceptable. Hell, I even wrote a fic (in another fandom) where that's exactly how it went. The robot was programmed to love. He had feelings and emotions. He was sad that the woman he was in love with didn't love him back because he was a robot, and so forth. It was difficult for her to come to terms with that, but she eventually realized she did love him too. So I guess I can see how the man in Chobits might like the robot girl.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know the character all that well either, but I don't think you really thought it through when you tried to compare the two.

Just so long as I'm nitpicking: "Programmed to love" still isn't the same as love freely felt and chosen.

My understanding of Chobits is that she is actually capable of emotions, love, and other functions that are entirely outside of her programming, and that the moral of the story was that love transcends form and sex. This really just makes the OP look foolish, especially since if that's the case, a relationship with a robot wouldn't be any easier.

Unfortunately, Chii (the computer) behaves like a small child, unable to even speak in more than single words at the beginning, so I found the whole thing rather creepy. You also turn her power on by pressing between her legs.

Re: 107

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I could overlook the child-like beginnings if he falls in love with her later, once she's aged and "matured" and learned. I could see that process being the process in which one falls in love. But if he is totally into her as the child-mentality, that is a bit creepy.

And, as for the "turning on" bit, lolollolollo Japan. That seems a bit much. Is she specficially a "Sex bot" or is she just some sort of generic maid/friendship/whatever bot?

Re: 107

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
The "persocons" can do everything normal computers can do, in addition to being a sort of advanced sex toy. Hideki (the main character) never uses Chii that way, though. By the end, when he's supposedly in love with her, he refrains from it because penetration would reformat her hard drive (and any other type of sex is apparently non-existent in this universe).

Chii does learn to talk better as time passes, but she never expresses herself (or behaves) like an adult. Seriously, she sounds like she's about five years old throughout most of the series.

It's not that I'm opposed to the idea in theory - I loved "The Silver Metal Lover" when I read it, so I know human/robot relationships can be done well - but I don't think CLAMP did a very good job with this particular story.

Re: 107

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that does make a difference. I'd have more issues with her being childlike than I would with her being a robot, but it's all one in the same. I'm all for being sold on a robot/human love story, but I'm not sure that would work unless I felt they were equals, and it doesn't sound like she is.

(Also, um, wtf sort of person designs a sex toy that reformats each time you fuck it? How does that even make sense? If you get off on your sex bot saying or acting certain ways during sex, wouldn't you want her to remember those things so you didn't have to reprogram her before sex each time? X_x;;;)

Question: does SHE want sex?

Re: 107

No it's more like he raises her like a little kid; she can't talk or dress herself at the beginning, and she doesn't know what anything is.

Also, um, wtf sort of person designs a sex toy that reformats each time you fuck it?

I know. That was one of the problems with the series; much of it just wasn't logical. Why make a computer you could have sex with, but then make it impossible to do it and still keep your data?

Question: does SHE want sex?

Revoltingly, she seems to want anything Hideki wants. There are a couple of close calls, IIRC, and she just goes along with what he does. Her personality really isn't very clear...

Thank you. You srticulated perfectly what's always bothered me about their relationship. Chii's... well, even if she can't have sex with him, she basically exists to give him unconditional love and serve his emotional needs. She's just servicing him in another way. It's... yeah, creepy is the word.

That was only the case for Chii (and maybe Freya, but they never went into that). We're told that most persocoms have their reset switch located in their "ears" somewhere. In fact, the character who tells us this (and is obviously embarrassed to be having this conversation) explains just why having the switch "down there" would be a problem.

[identity profile] jlarinda.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Chii's creator is... special.

But even so, I doubt she has a sex drive at all?

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Chii's creator is... special wiggly Icchan.

FIX'D.

This. Very much this.

Also, it's a totally cute series, though obviously it's not for everyone -- hope you enjoy it if you ever check it out!

[identity profile] rockthetardis.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
You might like Zettai Kareshi, then. It's a Japanese drama, and you can find torrents for the translated episodes at SARS-Fansubs.com. (There are only eleven or twelve episodes total.) The protagonist actually spends the majority of the series rejecting her robot "lover", because she doesn't think of him as a real person.

The ending made me cry, but, oh, was it worth it.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-31 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not shallow, I think it's disgusting and disturbing, and no, I know sex isn't everything. I don't think it's romantic to be in love with a computer. I have no interest in sex, but I'm not going to marry my macbook.

Re: 101

(Anonymous) 2011-08-01 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah... and also, I realize this might not be the case for this particular person (OP knows them better than I do), but not everyone's writing is completely (or even partially) based on their own experiences. Some people just find the dynamic of dysfunctional relationships interesting (I do, and I've never been in one).
