No one should wear clothes that do not fit their body type.

God forbid you look bad in public!

I think I love you.

I think the original comment's remark was badly worded, but I get what they were trying to say -- you're totally free to look bad in public if you want, but don't bitch and moan when people say you look bad.

We can talk about looking beyond appearances all we want, but the fact remains that even if I will not judge your personality based on what you look like, my automatic reaction to someone wearing something awful (clashing colours, whatever) will be that you are not aesthetically pleasing to my eyes. Does it matter/affect my opinion of you as a human being? No. But I'll still think what you're wearing looks bad.

It's like looking at a painting. The artist can be the sweetest person ever and may be my best friend even, but if their art is ugly, then their art is ugly.

There's a difference between deciding that I look bad and, say, going "wow look how horrible she looks she should never leave her house again and especially not wearing that." Or, in this example, posting the pictures on the internet for distribution.

To most people, making an ugly painting is far less criminal than leaving the house without looking a particular way. Either way, seeing something that you don't find aesthetically pleasing doesn't give you an excuse to tear another person down and generally be a prick.

Oh, yeah -- I'm not agreeing with the secret and I think they should STFU because how people dress shouldn't affect their sense of well-being or damage their apparently sensitive sensibilities. If they find it ugly, they should keep it to themselves.

I was mostly just referring to the comment and your comment -- no, it's not a crime to look bad in public. I don't give a flying fuck what you choose to do/wear. But the commenter was right, too -- be aware of what you look like and the impression you're giving, regardless of body type. If you're 90 lbs and flaunting your ass, I will question what impression you are trying convey. If you're fat and flaunting your ass, I will question what impression you are trying to convey. There's a reason why dress codes exist at work places and in professional settings and such; how you dress does affect how people perceive you. Maybe it's not right that this occurs, maybe we shouldn't all feel forced to conform to society in terms of the way we dress, but that's not the point -- the fact remains that these are the existing norms and standards of today. Deviate from them if you wish, but be aware that you are deviating and that you do give off a different impression depending on how you choose to dress and present yourself.

Sure, that's fair. I don't think that dress codes are the devil. I just have beef with statements like "always follow the fashion rules!," especially when it's implied that if you don't, you deserve whatever kind of mistreatment you get.

You can wear whatever the goddamn hell you like in public, you special little snowflake, you. But, you know, if you go out in unkempt or dirty clothes don't get mad when someone calls you a slob.

Re: 153

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-31 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, because there's absolutely no middle ground between What Not To Wear and looking like a bag lady.

Scroll up and read my other response before getting your panties in a twist over nothing.

You honestly mean to say you really don't care about your appearance? That you never make the effort to look decent? It's not about tarting yourself up, but actually having pride in your appearance. Looking presentable is NOT following the fashion rules.

I bet you're a hit at job interviews, you fashion rebel you...

Re: 153

(not the op, but chiming in here)

I hate that I have to arbitrarily 'look nice' for other people, because I honestly couldn't give a shit. If I'm fully clothed and clean, I don't care. I hate makeup, I hate having to spend money on fancy clothing, I hate having to pretend I'm a person who cares about my appearance in job interviews, and I hate the standards placed on people in our society. I don't shave my legs or pluck my eyebrows because I find it incredibly silly and pointless.

I make an effort to look decent because I have to for people like you who actually place value on it. But, no, I don't really care that much about my appearance. I value my intellect, my personality, my actions, my loved ones, etc, etc...

Of course, health is important. But looking a certain way? I couldn't care less. People made it a big deal, but it's not really important in the grand scheme of things.

And I do look good. I keep myself healthy and clean and reasonably dressed. That's enough for me.

Uh, I never said that. I said that looking bad in public is not as OMGHORRIBLE as people seem to think it is.

I put as much work into my appearance as you'd expect an average guy to put into his appearance, except, you know, shaving and brushing my hair. I don't see why that means I'm lacking in pride.
