I agree that the focus should be on health, but unfortunately, that's not something which is easy for outsiders to judge. The reason fat people get so defensive is that it's very very common for others to make snap judgments about their health - and in turn, the value and quality of their lives - based solely on their appearance. We would never do this for any other physical trait. It's true that being fat is correlated with an elevated risk for various diseases. But that's just what it is, a risk factor. Whether or not someone's life is actually being adversely affected by their weight is not something you can tell by looking at them. You also can't tell if that person IS trying to change the situation. A two-hundred pound jogger is laughable until you learn they used to be a FOUR hundred pound jogger, and are literally half the man they used to be. So being depressed by someone's current physical state really doesn't mean a hill of beans.
