Except in published work (not sure about fanfic) it is often a dad who feels this amazing bond the first time he holds his newborn. I would even say most of the time that I read a book with a good dad in it there's some memory of the overwhelming love he felt the first time he held his kid and saying he instantly felt he would die for them is so common that it's really annoying. And if he's a cis guy and it's not an mpreg fanfic he didn't just give birth.

Heck, I see it about adopted babies too. Granted, people who adopt a baby almost certainly want a baby very much and probably had to wait a long time and now the baby's finally here so they're probably pretty emotional.
