I stopped asking people for fic recs for several reasons:

1. I feel awkward if someone recs something to me and I end up hating it. (Mostly when friends or mutuals rec it because that way it tends to come up.)
2. A lot of people have genuinely bad taste and it's not much different than searching for the good stuff myself.
3. Main reason: There will always, ALWAYS, be a number of people reccing things that I explicitely state are on my DNW/squick list. Usually with an added "I KNOW you hate this but try this version of it it's sooo great" and I'm just tired of that.

Well, trust me, it's just as awkward when when they rec it to you and you hate it.

But people who rec it despite knowing what you hate are displaying some kind of insecurity about something and really should stop doing that.

Well yeah, obviously it's awkward for both sides.
