Was he well known enough to be overrated? I mean, I loved him but he never seemed majorly popular.

I think of him more as a comedian's comedian, if that makes any sense. He died relatively young, so lots of people have never heard of him... but there are very few American comedians who haven't.

He was huge on the Internet and in stoner-y alt circles 15, 20 years ago.

Maybe it's an unfair assessment, but every now and then, YT will recommend him to me. Or, I'll be watching something about comedians and inevitably people in the comments section will praise the guy as the greatest comedian ever.

Anyone who dies gets overrated but he was decent enough

Okay.

I liked his material and delivery better than a lot of the comedians who came up around the same time and are still around, like Marc Maron, Stephen Lynch, Wanda Sykes, Lewis Black, Patton Oswalt, Maria Bamford, etc. I'm not saying these comedians are not good, in fact, I also enjoyed watching all of them, just, I liked Mitch Hedberg better.

He would probably consistently make my top ten list (which is an ever evolving one as I become aware of comedians or lose interest in ones I had liked). Would this have changed if he was still alive and putting out material? Maybe.

You probably prefer crap like Dane Cook or Daniel Tosh.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-10 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Lol. Ridiculous

(Anonymous) 2019-12-10 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Nope.

Mitch's humor and delivery is just my perfect style. May the gods bless his soul.

It's really his delivery that I find outstanding. A lot of his jokes wouldn't be funny if someone else told them, but somehow the very specific way he delivers his jokes reveals the humor of the idea he's delivering.

I actually saw a video of him just the other night, doing a stand-up routine in 1995. At that point he hadn't fully developed his delivery yet, and it was amazing how much less funny his routine was.

I don't think that makes him a hack, though. I think the specific way you tell a joke is an inherent part of the joke. The art of humor is a lot more complicated than it seems.

I have to say that I have never heard of this person, and his picture is completely unfamiliar.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-10 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Neither have I! But knowing he was a comedian makes more sense, I'm very much not interested in stand-up comedy.

He was a comedian, had a bit of a cult following. I think he was pretty good, bought his CDs. He unfortunately died of an overdose at the age of 37 in 2005. If you're curious, here's a few minutes from one of his shows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujzy4cCUFk0

I clearly have no sense of humour. Nothing about this was funny to me.

(Anonymous) 2019-12-10 12:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I couldn't see what was so funny about him either. I found his delivery off-putting. Maybe he's an acquired taste, but he just made me want to roll my eyes. But idk, some F!S doesn't find some of the shit I enjoy to be funny either, so...
