That said, it sounds like it was the network's doing more than the creators'. Apparently Sookie was supposed to be gay, but the network said no. I guess Susie was Sookie 2.0 - the It's 2019 Now You Homophobic Asshats edition. I do hope/wish they'd let Susie be demonstrably gay on screen at some point. I mean, obviously she's not going to be open about her sexuality the way a person might be today, but that doesn't mean we can't see her with a woman behind closed doors, in a way that elevates her sexual identity from obvious-but-subtextual to fully textual.
