It's pretty hard to sit down and get absorbed in a novel while cooking tomorrow's lunch or folding laundry. It's a lot easier to fit TV/movies into everything else. Reading requires devoting your full attention and not doing anything else with your time.

This. I put on a TV show in the background when I'm cooking, sorting/folding laundry, cleaning the kitchen, etc. I can't be reading while doing those things, but I can be listening to a TV show and partially watching it.
