106. I dunno. I automatically say "Light" now just because it's official, but at first I really thought Light was the more fanbratty name. Raito seems like a more likely actual Japanese name, especially when you keep in mind the other human characters' names (Misa, Matsuda, Souchirou was his father I think?), and the fact that the in the case of the other two human characters with weird names (Mello and Near), they're fake names, and their real names are normal. I'm still pretty much of the opinion that Raito Yagami makes more sense simply from a naming perspective, whereas Light is just a pretty pointless translation of that; Mello and Near are correct, and "Mero" and "Nia" are ridiculous because they obviously used specific words as their false names.

(Also mostly I think the argument is less about "OMG IT'S ALL HET!!!" but the fact that she randomly decided to pair up every single character you could even consider being mentioned. Even if some of them weren't normal heterosexual marriages that would have seemed like a ton of random to me. Making a huge point to pair off every character by the end is kinda unnecessary, isn't it?)

doing it wrong #1: ... I don't see how this is "doing it wrong," really. Too big maybe, not!secret maybe, but doing it wrong? It seems like a pretty normal secret to me. =X

Okay, I am royally confused here. The person who got me into Death Note seemed to think that "Raito" was Light's name in Japanese, and that it was translated into English as Light because that's what the word actually meant (you know, because significant symbolism is significant). Now I'm hearing from several different people that Raito is a mistranslation, although in the movie adaptation of Death Note (w/o voice-overs), it sounds like everyone addresses him as Raito ... or something very similar. So, why the heck is Raito considered low-brow wapanese? Is it just an overblown fan-preference for the official dub, or are people who use the latter term being ignorant / disrespectful? Clarification would be love.

Actually, Light's real name in Japanese is 夜神月, which strictly speaking is "Yagami Raito." But Raito is the Japanese word for Light. I just... think it far more likely that a Japanese man named his son "Raito," again especially seeing as how everyone else in the series had normal, everyday names.

Mostly, it seems like a blown-out-of-proportion version of the Alice/Arisu debate (fun fact: Angelic Layer has a character named Arisu who had a doll with a Wonderland theme named Alice!), or maybe the Ahiru/Duck debate. Ahiru means "duck," but I just thought them translating her name into "Duck" for the English version of the series was unnecessary and prefer the original Japanese. With Light, I actually prefer Raito because it makes more sense to me as a name, but... you can see the response from fandom for going against the official. XD;

Ahh, thank you. I think I get it now. Although if it isn't "bad" Japanese, I don't really understand why many fans are so attached to the name change.

I'm not even in Death Note fandom, but I do know that Light is not a translation of Raito. His actual name (confirmed by the mangaka) is the English word "light", not any Japanese word or name. The confusion comes from an English word being rendered in kanji and then transliterated back into roman characters by scanlaters.

Characters call him "Raito" in the anime for the same reason they call Alucard "Arucard" and Edward Elric "Edo". They can't pronounce it properly, English-speaking fans can and should.

Ah, I know, I just phrased that badly... I know his official name from the mangaka is "Light," I just first saw it as Raito and can't help thinking that still makes more sense when it comes to just character names in general. Raito seems more like... a name, whereas Light seems to fit more in with the pattern set by "L," "Mello," and "Near," which are all fake names. I'm aware that it is actually Light, and I do use Light, I just... prefer Raito because it makes more sense to me. XD;

(Shortass tangent here, but it's the same in Tsubasa, really. Scanslators and even official translations flip-flopped back and forth between "Fai" and "Fye," and the official, Clamp-sanctioned spelling turned out to be FAY. Which... as an English-speaking fan, that's pronounced completely differently to me. The spelling always makes me think Fay as in, like, Faye Valentine, so I much prefer the unofficial spellings, even if I do try to use the official canon spelling.)

I see your response to 106 and raise you a thumbs-up: that was about the most sensible explanation I've heard for someone using "Raito" despite the translated "official" versions out now. Thank you for putting into a clear, understandable perspective.
