Yeah, an ending where Harry ends up surrounded by his acquired family (Ron, Hermione, his Godson, and the rest of his friends), and realising that the traditional family set up isn't a prerequisite for happiness would have been nice.

I don't think the books are that heteronormative, really; it's just that the two main couples are so formulaic. At least Ron/Hermione had proper buildup; I rather liked how it played out, really, while I spent most of the sixth book suspecting Harry had been slipped a love potion (they kept mentioning love potions all the time! I thought it was a Clue!).

No, I agree. The books in sum aren't bad at all.

I do have to wonder if it had anything to do with Rowling's idealized situation. Didn't she write that epilogue while she was still a single, struggling mother?

Yeah, I think she wrote it at the same time as she wrote the first book, actually. It may be that she let her own vision of the ideal life influence the characters a bit too much.

I really like the books, and I think she was original in many ways; I was surprised several times, which is always nice. That the romance for the main characters was so hyper-traditional, and that the pairings were so easy to spot from the very start was a bit disappointing, but not a great tragedy or anything, heh.

You know what's kind of sad? I read that line and instead of thinking of JKR, I thought of Stephenie Meyer. It bothers me how people often compare the two (in a positive fashion, as if Meyer is half as good a writer as JKR), but this line makes me think they do have a bit more in common than I was originally willing to admit.

Why is that with HP, people got into massive debates re: the epilogue, but the whole of the Twilight series reading like that causes people to get up and SQUEE!? It's too sickeningly idealistic, IMO.

In that respect, yes, in a way they do. But Ginny is not a main character, and Harry is not a crazy stalker whose life centres around her, so Rowling's love story seems a lot less insane. I'm more prepared to forgive badly developed side characters than badly developed main characters. Rowling's story overall is about other things, so an insufficiently plotted love story is only annoying, not rage-inducing, haha.

Plus, Rowling did rather a good job with certain other relationships, and she's very good with friendships (which I think she should have stuck with, concerning Harry).

Honestly? I think it's because Rowling writes a great story, her writing, while not fantastic, is good and has heart.

Meyer writes an idealised teenage romance, and if you have that mindset you squee, and if you don't, you generally think the whole thing is rubbish and don't bother with it. Or gleefully mock it, of course! But there won't be much critical debate. The writing can't support it, plainly speaking.

Thank you! That was my major problem with it too. I have no issues with Harry/Ginny and grudgingly accepted that they'll end up together but really? It was just too sudden. :\
