Wallis sobbing over David's body was especially odious to me. Fuck both of them.

One of the fan excuses for the change in the characterization is that Charles didn't view Uncle David as a Nazi sympathizer, and may have well been unaware he was one. It's a shoddy excuse imo. Even if we pretend Charles and the Queen were blinded by their fondness for Edward VIII, the audience is very aware of who he was.

I don't think that characterization explanation works, either. The show isn't from an unreliable narrator pov where we're looking at everything through Charles' eyes. Even if we were, does anyone really think that the Duke of Edinburgh could be discreet about something like that in private conversation? LOL...

Quite the opposite in reality - Prince Phillip (whose family fled the Nazis and he personally fought against them) is known to hate his guts. There's a theory that the Queen also hated him for essentially forcing her father into the stressful role that killed him quite young, but whether or not she was actually fond of him, she absolutely froze him out of all family occasions for his entire life.

It's complicated, because didn't Prince Philip's sisters all married members of the Nazi party? IA that whatever the Queen's personal feelings towards her uncle, she certainly took care to make sure he was OUT of the country and far away from power and influence.
