Yeah, this is where it gets annoying. I've been in fandoms where fans have hated on the text and the other characters for "misgendering" the character they headcanon as not cis. Example? Gatchaman Crowds. According to the writer, Rui is a boy who crossdresses. The other characters call him "Rui-kun" at one point and the subtitles use "he/him." If you ignore word of god, a trans headcanon wouldn't be totally out of line with canon, but there were fans who said they wouldn't forgive the other characters until they apologize to Rui for misgendering "her." Which they won't because canonically, there was no misgendering because Rui is not canonically female.
