Of course she's saying this now that she can get woke points. Just like Rowling's "Oh sure Hermione could have just as well been black" even though she never imagined her as such or "I always thought of Dumbledore as gay" even though she never wrote it into the books.
And that still plays into the bullshit that there are unique traits belonging to "male" or "female" people which just reinforces gender stereotypes (as do genderfluid/nb identities in general tbh).

In my experience it's the other way around. Just this month from my trans circle:

"Hey, you don't have to put a label on it and you can take your time and do whatever is comfortable for you."

From my cis family:

"What are you thinking wearing a skirt in a public place? If you want to wear bras and panties, you can do it in your own home. What if your employer finds out? You're decades away from getting social security, if it lasts that long, and your father and grandfather ...."

Pretty much all the gender policing in my life comes from cis people. They're the ones who are obsessed with knowing exactly what kind of queer I am.

"Oh sure Hermione could have just as well been black" is literally true tho. She never SAID she always imagined her as black, she is literally admitting that her imagined version of the character isn't the only one that's valid, which is the opposite of what Tamora Pierce initially did. If authors saying "your interpretation is valid" is only for "woke points" then let them go for those woke points, they're not wrong.

Oh and JKR absolutely did write Dumbledore as gay lmao you're too young to remember the release of book 7 and everyone pointing out the subtext immediately, before she made the statement.
