The way I see it is that whatever you believe, worship, or have faith in, even if it's nothing or none of the above, that is the afterlife, or lack of, that will find you after passing.
If you don't believe in any god then nothing will await you after you pass on. If you're Christian, you'll be judged before passing on to heaven or to hell. (I couldn't find the exact details on how this is done;;) Even beliefs that are cast aside as mythology. So if you're a devout follower of the ancient Egyptian Gods, you will be lead to Duat (the underworld) to have your heart/soul measured against the Feather of the Godess Ma'at, to determine if you get into the paradise of Aaru (the afterlife), or be fed to the Godess Ammit.

It's something I've always felt, but after my first real experience with death, it became something I feel strongly about.
