When I was a lot younger, I liked watching disturbing movies for the same reason people watch horror movies. I wanted to feel disturbed or frightened. I think this was the last of the "horrifically violent and traumatic for the sake of disturbing people" genre movies I ever saw. Nowadays I have no interest in the stuff, but I can't really judge others for liking it because I had that phase too. It's true that some people watch this genre for sick sadistic pleasure, but other people watch it to process difficult emotions, or to understand things they have little personal knowledge of.
