I used to read AND write in my native language, Finnish, back when I was a teen. I mean, I also read the occasional English fic, but the Finnish anime fandom was big enough that I didn't really have to unless I felt like it.

I stopped reading Finnish fics when I entered non-anime fandoms and realized there's little to no content in Finnish. I still wrote in Finnish, tho, just in case there was someone else out there who would like to read it (spoiler alert: there usually wasn't) and because my written English wasn't very good (as opposed to reading it). Once my English was actually good enough to write in English without it being awful, I gradually stopped writing in Finnish so that more people would be able to read my fics.

Nowadays writing fanfics in Finnish feels weird so I very rarely do it (non-fanfic writing is fine, tho). Not to mention that it feels wasteful because there is nobody around to read the thing, while my English fics have readers all over the world.

So, I think the reason why the other-than-English fics tend to be cringy is because the writers are young and inexperienced, making the fics kinda... sucky. The ones who are old enough to actually have decent English AND writing skills write in English in order to get more readers.

Huh, that's a really good take. The more I think about it I do come across a lot of fics where the author mentions English not being their first language. So that makes sense!
