Yup, that'd be the logical reason, matched with the sour note Victor made with saying Yuri would win the gold medal in front of all his competition.
Yuri!!! On Ice, has never been the best at displaying the relationships between the different skaters, and until (and after) that point the only one who seemed to have a problem with J.J. was the Russian Yuri, which is mainly/only because J.J. beat him in his first senior competition.
J.J.'s obnoxiousness was mainly on the ice, I would say. Even his competitiveness with Victor was overshadowed by Christophe, who actually said to Yuri that he shouldn't be keeping Victor all to himself. J.J.'s tagline was mostly to be unlikeable enough to have the viewers root against him despite being the most talented in the competition. That impression wasn't so definitive in the viewpoint of his fellow skaters.
